On Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, Team Chevy driver William Byron found himself in a NASCAR Cup Series Victory Lane for the second week in a row. And both times he utilized an overtime restart to get there.

Team Chevy driver William Byron became the first back-to-back winner in the NASCAR Cup Series this season with his victory at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday.

Byron started the United Rentals Work United 500 at Phoenix from the third position and won Stage One in his Hendrick Motorsports No. 24 Camaro ZL1, leading 62 of the race's first 63 laps. But while his car was fast on the one-mile oval in Avondale, Arizona, Byron looked destined for simply a solid result while his Hendrick teammate and race polesitter Kyle Larson contended for the win.

However, a yellow flag with 10 laps remaining brought the field together and during the ensuing pit stops, Byron's Rudy Fugle-led team changed two tires to gain track position. Byron was in second place on the front row for the restart, outside Larson, but another quick yellow sent the race into a two-lap overtime.

Byron again was positioned in the outside lane alongside Larson on the final re-rack and made the pass for the lead on the high side of the track. He held off all challengers to take the checkered flag by .330 seconds.

Last week, the No. 24 team also changed two tires during a late-race caution period to gain track position and Byron drove to the win in overtime after dominating the day.

At Phoenix, recent history repeated itself.

Byron celebrates with his Hendrick Motorsports teammates in Victory Lane.

"I owe the last couple of weeks to Rudy (Fugle, crew chief), said Byron, who led a total of 64 laps. "He's done a really good job strategy-wise, and execution-wise we've done a good job to put ourselves in those positions on the front row with a shot at the end. Thanks to everybody back at Hendrick Motorsports putting together great cars and just doing a great job. It's a big credit to them, the engine shop, Mr. (Rick) Hendrick and everybody. It's cool to have Valvoline back on the car with a really historic-looking paint scheme, so it's nice to get into Victory Lane."

The win was the sixth of Byron's Cup Series career and his first at Phoenix. He also became the first back-to-back winner of the 2023 season, and Chevrolet has now scored victories in the year's first four points-paying events. The last time any manufacturer accomplished that feat was when Chevrolet did so in 2001.

Byron's win was the 26th for the Bowtie Brand in the Cup Series at Phoenix, extending its record, and it was the 837th NASCAR premier series victory for Chevrolet.

Kyle Busch finished eighth at Phoenix and was one of five Team Chevy drivers in the top-10.

Team Chevy occupied half of the top-10 on Sunday with Larson coming home fourth after leading a race-high 201 laps, while Kyle Busch, Alex Bowman and Josh Berry finished eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively.

Through the first 10 percent of the NASCAR Cup Series season, Chevrolet remains perfect. But the best is perhaps still to come.

Chevrolet has won all four of the NASCAR Cup Series points-paying events thus far in 2023.
