Team Chevy driver Josef Newgarden won the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday in his 12th start in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. And he did it with a last-lap pass in his Team Penske No. 2 Chevrolet.

After moving forward from his 17th starting spot to run near the front throughout the race, Newgarden was sitting in the second position when the red flag was displayed for an accident for the second time in the race's closing laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 

The result was a one-lap shootout for the victory on the famed 2.5-mile oval in Speedway, Indiana. Newgarden took the lead with an outside move on the backstretch on the final lap and held on to take the win by 0.0974 seconds. The finish was the fourth-closest in Indy 500 history.

After crossing the yard of bricks, the 32-year-old driver from Henderson, Tennessee, jumped into the massive crowd on hand under the flag stand to celebrate with the fans.

"This is just amazing. Regardless of where you're sitting in America, driving a car, you're working on it, or you're out here in the crowd, you're part of this event and the energy," said Newgarden, who led five laps in the race. "So thank you to Indianapolis. I love this city. I grew up racing cars here when I was a kid.

And I'm just so thankful for Roger (Penske) and everybody that has been a part of this. I just felt like everyone kept asking me why I haven't won this race. And, you know, they look at you like you're a failure if you don't win it, and I wanted to win. It's so bad. I knew. I knew we were capable. And I'm so thankful to Shell, Team Chevy, everybody, it's a huge team effort, as everybody knows. Just so glad to be here."

The victory was the 12th in the Indy 500 for Chevrolet and the Bowtie Brand's fifth in the race since the twin-turbo, direct-injected V-6 Chevy engine era began in 20212. It was also Roger Penske's 19th win in the Indy 500.

"What an exciting pass by Josef Newgarden and an incredible finish to The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," said Jim Campbell, General Motors Vice President Performance and Motorsports. Newgarden's win was the two-time NTT INDYCAR Series champion's second of the year and the 27th of his career. In addition, it represented Chevrolet's third victory this season and its 109th INDYCAR win since 2012.

Five Team Chevy drivers scored top-10 finishing positions at the Brickyard, with Santino Ferrucci coming home third, Alexander Rossi fifth, Conor Daly eighth and Rinus VeeKay 10th. In addition, 2013 race winner Tony Kanaan finished 16th in his final Indy 500 start.

For Newgarden, Team Penske and Chevrolet, Sunday's triumph will forever be a part of each's intertwined legacies.
