Team Chevy driver Scott McLaughlin claimed the NTT INDYCAR SERIES checkered flag at Barber Motorsports Park on Sunday after a three-pit-stop strategy allowed him to charge to the finish.

Scott McLaughlin takes the checkered flag for Team Chevy at Barber Motorsports Park.

McLaughlin started the Children's of Alabama Indy Grand Prix from the fourth spot in his Team Penske No. 3 machine powered by a 2.2L direct-injected, twin-turbo V-6 Chevy engine. He moved into the lead for the first time on Lap 37 on the 17-turn, 2.3-mile road course outside Birmingham.

However, it wasn't until Turn 5 on Lap 72 when McLaughlin took over the lead for good, as strategy and flawless execution by his "Thirsty Threes" pit crew allowed the New Zealand driver to push harder than many of his competitors who were forced to save tires and fuel by only stopping twice.

McLaughlin built a gap over the event's final 18 circuits and took the victory by 1.7854 seconds. The win was McLaughlin's first of the season and the fourth of his career. It was also the second for Chevrolet in 2023.

McLaughlin celebrates with his team in Victory Lane.

"I call it a happy driver strategy," said McLaughlin, who led three times for a total of 24 laps. "I was a lot happier doing that. So thankful and first weekend with Good Ranchers on the car. What an amazing thing for them to be with us this weekend. My team advanced me there to Victory Lane."

Will Power scored a podium finish at Barber.

Chevrolet put five cars in the top-10 at Barber, with Will Power coming home third, Pato O'Ward fourth, Alexander Rossi eighth and Felix Roseqvist finishing ninth.

McLaughlin's win was the eighth for the Bowtie Brand in 11 races at Barber since 2012. It was also the 108th victory for Chevrolet overall since the manufacturer rejoined INDYCAR as an engine supplier for the 2012 season.

With the Month of May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway up next, Team Chevy is riding a wave of momentum.

Chevrolet has won two NTT INDYCAR SERIES races thus far in 2023.
