William Byron drove his iconic Hendrick Motorsports No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to the victory in Sunday's Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway, the 100th win for the number in the NASCAR Cup Series.

The historic feat was made even more special by the fact that on Throwback Weekend at the famed 1.366-mile oval in Darlington, South Carolina, Byron's paint scheme honored the legendary Jeff Gordon's No. 24 1998 All-Star Race livery. 

After qualifying in the fourth position for Sunday's race, Team Chevy's Byron kept his Camaro ZL1 near the front of the field throughout the day. He claimed top-five finishes in the race's first two stages, but didn't take the lead until Lap 288 amidst a series of late-race caution periods.

Byron was on the front row as the race entered overtime and pulled away during the green-white-checkered finish to score the win by 0.781 seconds.

The win was Byron's series-leading third of the season and the seventh of his career. His seven wins in the No. 24 combined with Gordon's 93 triumphs brought the car number to the century mark for victories. Every one of the number's wins has been with Chevrolet.

Byron came up just shy of the win in the spring Darlington race last year, and Sunday's victory was a sort of redemption.

"It's pretty amazing," said Byron, who led a total of seven laps. "My granddad passed away on Thursday, and just man, I wish my family could be here. Just things have a way of working out, honestly. It just worked out that way today. We didn't have the best third stage. We just kept battling, and things just kind of came back around."

The 25-year-old driver is also aware of the gravity his famed car number holds.

"I'm just thankful that I was able to get in this No. 24 car," he said. "I was too young at the time I feel like, but growing up, maturing and just having a great team around me and being able to build the core that we have. I have a great group of guys - Rudy (Fugle, crew chief), Brandon McSwain, Tyler (Jones, car chief), everybody on the team does a great job preparing good cars, and we work hard at it."

Byron's win was Chevrolet's series-leading eighth trip to Victory Lane thus far in 2023 and brought the Bowtie's record to 43 Cup Series wins all-time at the track "Too Tough to Tame." Chevrolet has also now scored 841 total wins in NASCAR's premier series, further extending its lead as the winningest manufacturer in series history.

On Sunday at Darlington, Chase Elliott took the third spot, Kyle Busch came home seventh and Justin Haley eighth to give Team Chevy four of the top-10 finishing positions.

The Bowtie also swept the weekend at Darlington, with Christian Eckes driving his McAnally-Hilgemann Racing No. 19 Chevrolet Silverado RST to the Craftsman Truck Series victory on Friday night, and Kyle Larson taking the victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series on Saturday behind the wheel of the Kaulig Racing No. 10 Camaro SS.

On a weekend that honored history, Chevrolet just made more of it.
