It’s a common figure of speech in the performance world, but one that bears repeating because it’s true. There is no replacement for displacement.

That’s a concept Chevrolet Performance engineers clearly considered when they designed the monstrous ZZ572/720R Deluxe crate engine.* Likewise, Noah Endicott was in a Big-Block state of mind when he dropped the crate power plant in his 1966 C10.

“I've been a Chevy guy all my life and I know [crate engines* are] reliable, they're done right and they put out plenty of power for the money,” he said during this summer’s Goodguys Summit Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.

Plenty of power is certainly true of the ZZ572/720R. The 572 cu.-in. monster is factory-rated at 727 horsepower and 680 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s tough too, utilizing a cast-iron block with four-bolt main caps, an all-forged rotating assembly and aluminum cylinder heads.

Both the block and valve covers are finished in Chevrolet’s famous orange, with the powder-coated valve covers reading “572 Chevrolet.” It’s a nice pop of color on an engine that means business. The orange also creates a unique contrast to Endicott’s sparse, tan-primer-painted pickup that looks right at home on the drag strip.
