Sights from North Carolina Speedweeks 2024

Stock car racing and North Carolina have been intertwined for more than eight decades. Nearly all NASCAR teams make their home in the Charlotte area, and the sport itself can trace many of its roots to the hills of the Old North State. The Chevrolet brand has been part of it all since the beginning, with dozens of legends steering its vehicles.

While North Carolina is a racing hotbed year-round, the end of May features a celebration of the sport. For two weeks straight, racing can be found on dirt and asphalt ovals in the state nearly every night of the week.  

Throughout the two-week period, hundreds of drivers take to the track at the grassroots level, many with Chevrolet Performance crate engines* under the hood.

Meanwhile, the three NASCAR national series are also in action, highlighted by the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway and one of the sport’s crown jewels: the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Charlotte race serves as the conclusion to the extensive period of competition. 
 
Among this year’s Bowtie highlights, Nick Sanchez of Rev Racing drove his Chevrolet Silverado RST to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory at the 1.5-mile Charlotte track on the Friday before Memorial Day. His truck chief, Chris Showalter, has been a part of all 700 Truck Series races and celebrated his birthday with a trip to Victory Lane.
 
On Saturday, Chase Elliott claimed the NASCAR Xfinity Series win in one of his rare starts in the series. Elliott, who has won six consecutive Most Popular Driver awards, won the 2020 Cup Series title and 2014 Xfinity Series championship.  
 
Finally, although only 249 of Sunday’s scheduled 400 laps could be completed due to weather, the pageantry of the Coca-Cola 600 was in full effect as Chevrolet NASCAR Cup Series teams performed in front of the sold-out grandstands and infield. Ultimately, Team Chevy claimed four of the top-10 finishing positions.
